Some of the best mornings exploring Maine start simple — a good breakfast and a short drive to somewhere scenic.
On this trip we started the day in Standish with breakfast at a local bakery before heading toward Sebago Lake and one of southern Maine’s most charming landmarks.
Breakfast at Sweet & Savory Bakehouse

We started the morning at
Sweet & Savory Bakehouse, a small local bakery known for its breakfast sandwiches and baked goods.
Right away the menu made it clear there were plenty of good options to choose from.

The bakery had trays of fresh pastries, pies, and homemade English muffins ready behind the counter. It’s the kind of place where everything looks good enough that making a decision takes a minute.

One of the sandwiches we ordered was a steak and egg breakfast sandwich or better known as the “Steaky Steaky Eggs & Bakey.”
It came with Double Steak, Cheddar, American, Egg, Bacon, and Garlic Mayo. I opted to add the Green Lightning Jam per the recommendation of the owner and it did not disappoint. It came hot and fresh, piled onto a homemade toasted English muffin. The steak, egg, and melted cheese made for a filling start to the day.

We also grabbed a fried chicken breakfast sandwich known as the “Mother Clucker”, which came with a Chicken Patty, Egg, Cheddar, American, adn Green Lightning Jam. It was just as amazing as the other.
Both sandwiches were unique, tasty, and hearty, Exactly what you want before heading out to explore Maine on a cold morning.

It’s easy to see why this spot is a favorite with locals. Good food, friendly service, and the kind of small-town bakery atmosphere that feels welcoming the moment you walk in.
Sebago Lake in Winter
After breakfast we headed toward
Sebago Lake.
In winter the lake feels completely different than during the busy summer months. The shoreline was quiet, and large sections of the lake were frozen over.

A few ice fishing shacks sat out on the frozen lake, a reminder that even in the coldest months people are still finding ways to enjoy the water.
The stillness of the lake and the open view across the ice made the stop feel peaceful.
Babb’s Covered Bridge

From Sebago Lake we made the short drive to
Babb’s Covered Bridge.
The bridge sits along a quiet rural road and is one of the last remaining covered bridges in Maine.

Driving toward the bridge feels like stepping back in time. The narrow one lane road and surrounding woods make it easy to imagine what this area looked like many years ago.

The red wooden structure stands out against the winter landscape, making it one of the most photographed bridges in the state.

Cars can still drive directly through the bridge, which makes visiting it even more fun. But be careful as it is only one car at a time in this beauty.
Up close you can see the wooden beams and historic structure that have allowed the bridge to stand here for generations.

It is also a popular swimming spot for when it warms up. You can see the rope swings waiting for the temperature to raise so they can get used again.
A Simple Maine Morning
Sometimes the best trips aren’t big adventures.
They’re mornings that start with a great breakfast, followed by a short drive to a scenic spot that reminds you why Maine is such a special place.
Between the bakery stop, the quiet winter views of Sebago Lake, and the charm of Babb’s Covered Bridge, this simple morning trip turned into one worth remembering.
